Hohe Salve
Reaching for the Sky
The name “Salve” comes from the Latin greeting “be greeted” or “be healthy.” It’s hard to describe what the calm and thoughtful patch of summit earth at Hohe Salve does to us. Some call it the peak of emotions. Discover it for yourselves! 70 three-thousand-meter peaks greet you in the distance on clear days, just as the majestic Salve Chapel stands watch over the entire region. It simply feels good to arrive here, and what feels good is healthy. Time for a “Salve”! And if the sun is shining, it’s your lucky day. Because on the Sun Dial Path – around the summit – you can experience and live time anew, here, close to the sky.
Not only about the Hexenwasser witches, but also about the Hohe Salve and its Salven Giant, there is a well-kept legend in Söll. You can even browse through the old witch books to learn more.
The massive head and protruding hand with the stone are the only remnants of the buried Salven Giant, who was supposedly the ruler of the surrounding valley landscapes many years ago. You can safely slide down his back and hide in his large hand. Among his greatest enemies was the cunning giant of Wildschönau, who ruled with a terrifying authority over the entire valley from high up on the Markbachjoch. The constant conflict between the Salven Giant and the Markbachjoch Giant was soon… (read the full legend here).
Time doesn’t pass, time doesn’t come, the time is now!
All life on Earth is connected with the celestial events. However, it cannot be counted, measured, weighed, or digitized. A wise proverb says: “Do as the sundial does: Count only the bright hours!”
We have created a scenic “Sun Path” to delight ourselves in the light and shadow. With this joy, we want to inspire you. The path takes us from the beginnings of celestial observation to the current ways of measuring time. The vastness of the Alps is concentrated here on a single shaded point. The summit features a wind harp, which may start singing for you with a bit of luck. The experience and discovery happen through participation, observation, experimentation, and playful engagement with the solar stations.
“We must do it. Experiencing is connected to movement. This is the hurdle. For centuries, we have been practiced at replacing experience with knowledge.” – Hugo Kükelhaus
You can start at any time or, on sunny Tuesdays, join a solar discovery tour with someone from our team. To relax and reflect, you can later rest on the terrace of the summit hut, which slowly rotates clockwise, digest, dream into the distance, beyond time.
“When you sit with a nice girl for two hours, it feels like a minute. But when you sit on a hot stove for a minute, it feels like two hours. That’s relativity.” – A. Einstein
